(Get late on the first day of college only! You only handle this girl now. She has eaten my life away)
I heard my mother shouting from outside the bathroom.

Aaj toh tu gayi mannat. Hayye rabba meher kari 🙏🏻. I thought to myself quickly wearing my clothes and rushing out of the bathroom.

I don't know why but I always take my sweet time during a bath. Raj (short for Rajveer) takes only 5 minutes while I take a whole half an hour enjoying my bath and it will turn into 1 hour if I have to wash my hair cause my hair is sooo long. They reach below my waist and washing them is a really big task!

I quickly took my hair out of the towel and started applying my skincare. I quickly sprayed the toner onto my face and started fanning my face so that the toner dries up and gets absorbed into my skin. Once I felt like that was done, I took my moisturizer and applied it and while waiting for it to dry, I wore my silver jhumkas which went perfectly with the black kurti completing my college look.

My love for jhumkas is unconditional but my mother's hate for jhumkas is undeniable. She doesn't like them and doesn't let me wear them as well! Kaha ka insaaf hai yeh??
(What justice is this?)
But still I keep my stand and wear them. Like who doesn't like jhumkas?

Seeing as my moisturizer is dried, I applied my sunscreen and my lip gloss. And of course perfume is mandatory.
My love for perfumes is never ending. I don't know why but I like them soo much. I have around 8-10 perfumes already and still I don't feel satisfied. Well humans are like that. They are never satisfied with the things they already have and instead ask for more. Like my love for books and perfumes. Did I miss anything else? Anyways let's get ready quickly.
Should I apply a bindi? Nahi yaar over ho jaayega vaise bhi late ho gayi hu.
(No, it will look too overdressed plus I am already late)

I wore my juttis, the best footwear, took my bag which I had already packed last night 😌and went downstairs to see my mother and father and brother having breakfast.

"Good morning papa, good morning mumma" I wished both of them and kept my bag on the chair going towards the kitchen to make myself coffee.

"Aa gayi?? Mil gaya tame?"
(So now you have come?? Have you got the time?)
Suddenly I heard my mother shouting, her voice booming in the kitchen loud and clear. I started looking here and there to see if there was anyone else in the kitchen.

"Iddar uddar ki takki jaani? Tainu keha tainu!"
(Why are you looking here and there? I said it to you only!)
I mentally slapped my forehead preparing myself for a lecture.

"Itna late Mannat? Aapko yaad hai na college se pehle gurdwaare hoke aana tha? Aaj first day hai aapka! Thoda responsible bano beta. Shaadi ke baad kaun jhelega tumhaari yeh harkate?"
(So late Mannat? You remember you had to go tyhe gurdwara (holy place for sikh people like a church for christians) today before going to college? It's your first day today! Please be a little responsible. Who is gonna tolerate your habits like this after marriage?)
My mother entered the kitchen and started with her speech

I walked towards her and held her shoulders while saying "Oo hoo mumma. Shaadi abhi hui thodi hai yaar. Usme kitna time hai. Abhi toh mujhe padhna hai, khud kuch Banna hai, financially independent hona hai, uske baad dekhenge shaadi ka. Abhi choro yeh sab. Aap toh ho na meri yeh harkate jhelne ke liye? Aur koi nahi chahiye mujhe fir."
(Oo Mom. There is still time for my wedding. I want to study more, become something, be financially independent right now, and after that we will look into this wedding topic. Leave it for now. You are here for tolerating my tantrums right? Then I don't need anyone else)

I hugged her lightly, reassuring her that everything is fine. When she didn't hug me back, I started tickling her.

"Bas kar mannat pagal ho gayi hai kya?" (Stop it Mannat. Have you gone mad?)
My mother replied while laughing lightly and trying to get away from me.

"Aapko khush karne ke liye toh Mai pagal bhi banjau 😘" (I will happily go mad if you stay happy)
I replied while pulling her cheeks and kissing her on the cheeks while my mother looked at me with a light smile on my face.

I gave her my best cheerful smile and went back towards my work- making coffee.

Mannat went back towards making her coffee while her mother started clearing out the dishes from the dining table.

Mannat saw her mother working alone so she decided to help her by clearing out the dishes. Gurleen smiled in her mind thinking that her daughter maybe childish and bubbly but still cares for everyone around her.

She shook her head and went to the kitchen while Mannat put her coffee in a disposable cup. She went out of the kitchen, took her bag from the chair and called out to her mother to inform her that she was leaving and then left her house.

Just then Mannat received a call from her best friend, Kiara. She picked up the phone and said:

Mannat's POV

Kiara : Hello baby kaise ho?
(Hello baby. How are you?)

Mannat : Main badhiya aap batao? Kya kar rahe ho?
(I am good what about you? What are you doing?)

Kiara : Arrey kya batau yaar aaj mera internship ka pehla din hai aur hume lag raha hai hum koi gadbad na karde
(Ohh God what can I say, today is the first day of my internship and I am feeling what if I make any mistake?
She replied with tension and concern visible in her voice

Mannat : Kuch nahi hoga. Tension mat lo aap. Aap bas confidence rakho everything will be fine and Kanha ji toh hai hi saath mai
(Nothing will happen. You just don't take tension. Just have confidence everything will be fine. And Kanha ji is with us)
I reassured her

Kiara : Hmm Thank you. Achha aap batao college nahi gaye aap. Aaj aapka bhi college ka first day hai na?
(Hmm Thank you. Okay, tell me, you didn't go to college today? Today is your first day of college right?)
She asked me curiosity hinting in her tone

Mannat : Aaj toh first day hai abhi toh dekh ke pata chalega. Friends bante hai nahi bante hai. Bas college time se pahuch jau dosto ka baad mai dekhungi.
(Today is the first day and let's see whether I make friends today or not. Right now I just want to reach college on time and will see about friends later)

Kiara : Arrey don't worry aap bahut jaoge time se. Aur aap ho hi itni achhi ban jaayenge dost bhi. Chill karo
(Don't worry you will reach on time. And you are so good that you will automatically get friends. Just chill)

Mannat : Chal college pahuch gayi hu. Classes end hone ka baad call karti hu
( Okay, I have reached my college. I will call you after my classes end)
I told her hurrying as I saw my college in sight

Kiara : Haan okay hum bhi chalte hai.
Bye. See yaa. Take care ʜᴀᴀɴ ᴏᴋᴀʏ
(Yeah okay, I'm also going. Bye see Yaa Take care)

Mannat : Yeah byee see youu. You also take care.
(Yeah byee see youu. You also take care.)

I kept the phone inside my bag and swiftly walked over to the gate of my college. I showed my ID card to the guard outside and he granted me entry.

I went inside the gate and looked up, taking a glance at my college. I took a deep breath.
